“আমার ভাইয়ের রক্তে রাঙানো একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি, আমি কি ভুলিতে পারি…” These words, etched deep in the heart of every Bangladeshi, resonate with a pain and a pride that transcends generations. They speak of a sacrifice made for the right to speak, a right that forms the cornerstone of our identity. This 21st of February, as we at TAD Group commemorate International Mother Language Day, these words echo with a renewed poignancy.
For many, February 21st is a date learned in history books. But for some, like myself, it’s a deeply personal scar, a day etched in blood and tears. While I may not have personally witnessed the events of 1952, the stories, the pain, and the unwavering spirit of that struggle have been passed down through my family, becoming a part of my very being. I’ve heard tales of brave students, my brother among them, who took to the streets of Dhaka, demanding recognition for their mother tongue, Bangla. They faced batons, tear gas, and ultimately, bullets. My brother, like countless others, fell victim to this brutal suppression.
The loss was devastating. The silence in our home was deafening, a constant reminder of the vibrant voice that had been silenced forever. But amidst the grief, there was also an overwhelming sense of pride. My brother, along with his fellow martyrs, had become a symbol of resistance, a beacon of hope for a nation yearning for self-determination.
The significance of Ekushey (21st) extends far beyond the borders of Bangladesh. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of linguistic diversity and the fundamental human right to speak one’s mother tongue. It’s a testament to the power of peaceful protest and the unwavering spirit of a people united in their pursuit of justice.
At TAD Group, we believe in the power of communication and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. This International Mother Language Day, we not only remember the sacrifices made in 1952, but we also reaffirm our commitment to promoting linguistic diversity and celebrating the rich tapestry of languages that make our world so vibrant. We believe that every language, every voice, deserves to be heard.
This Ekushey, as we honor the martyrs and celebrate the spirit of our language movement, let us also reflect on our own roles in preserving and promoting our mother tongues. Let us strive to create a world where every individual feels empowered to express themselves in the language closest to their heart. Let the memory of my brother, and all those who sacrificed their lives for the right to speak their mother tongue, continue to inspire us to build a more just and equitable world.
“আমি কি ভুলিতে পারি?” No, we will never forget. Their sacrifice will forever fuel our commitment to linguistic freedom and cultural preservation.
